Race series
The original long-distance triathlon.
The IRONMAN was born in 1978 on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, when U.S. Navy Commander John Collins combined the Waikiki Roughwater Swim, the Around-Oahu Bike Race and the Honolulu Marathon into a single day to settle a debate over who was the fittest endurance athlete. Fifteen men started; twelve finished. The race has since grown into a global circuit and one of the most iconic single-day endurance events on the planet.
