Fourth time doing this event. (Fifth, if you count when it used to include the sprint and organized locally.) Well-organized, beautiful course, great experience.
One of the longest-running half-distance races in the United States, Musselman is a mid-July Finger Lakes classic known for its community atmosphere and its Seneca Lake swim. A fair, honest course: fast enough for a PB, rolling enough to punish an over-aggressive bike split.
Single-loop swim in Seneca Lake from Seneca Lake State Park in Geneva. Deep, clean water that is usually warm enough in July for a wetsuit-optional call in some years; typically calm early morning conditions with a light chop if the wind picks up from the south.
One rolling loop through the Finger Lakes farmland west and north of Geneva. No long climbs, but a near-constant series of short rollers and exposed ridge sections where crosswinds can bite. Road surface is mostly good rural pavement with a few rougher patches.
Two-loop run along the Seneca Lake shoreline and through Geneva's lakefront parks, with a short punchy hill each lap and long flat waterfront stretches. Well shaded in parts, but July humidity makes the aid stations count.
Actual monthly averages from the last 3 years (Open-Meteo). Real race day may vary.
Water temp uses athlete-reported values first, then official race data, then the marine archive (sea swims, measured at the nearest offshore point). Values tagged est. are modelled from recent air temperature for lakes and rivers, where no observational data exists.
