The race

Challenge Salou opens the European long-course season each spring on the Costa Daurada. Course descriptions here reflect the flagship middle distance: a cool Mediterranean swim, a seriously hilly ride into the Tarragona hills, and a flat promenade run. Mild March weather and reliable training roads make it a popular early-season target.

Course

SwimSea

Mediterranean swim from Llevant beach in Salou. Warm-for-the-season but early-spring water (typically 14–16°C) makes it a firmly wetsuit race; sheltered bay with generally calm conditions.

Bike1,200 m (3,937 ft) elev.

Genuinely hilly 90 km through the Tarragona hinterland, climbing away from the coast into the Serra de Llaberia foothills before a fast descent back. Technical corners, long steady climbs and exposed ridgelines — one of the tougher half-distance bike courses in Spain.

Run100 m (328 ft) elev.

Flat, fast three-lap 21.1 km along the Salou seafront promenade and Passeig Jaume I. Sea-level, closed to traffic, and lined with spectators — a chance to claw back time after the climbing.
